EGG QUALITY ASSURANCE™
FOR BUSINESSES

The Egg Quality Assurance™ (EQA®) certification mark identifies Canadian eggs that come from local farms certified under the EQA® program and meet strict national standards for animal care and on‑farm food safety.

Displaying the EQA® certification mark on your egg cartons, menus, or product packaging makes it easier for consumers to make confident and informed food choices. Read on to learn more about the EQA® program, its certification mark, and how to apply to become a licensee at no cost.

THE EQA® PROGRAM

The EQA® program verifies that Canadian eggs are produced on local farms according to strict national standards, including the Animal Care Program and the Start Clean–Stay Clean® on‑farm food safety program. These two national programs are reviewed regularly to ensure alignment with the latest scientific information and best practices:

  • The national Animal Care Program is a required component of the EQA® program that ensures hens are well cared for. It includes more than 100 requirements, such as providing hens with a comfortable environment, a well-balanced and nutritious diet, fresh water, and clean surroundings.
  • The Start Clean–Stay Clean® program is a required component of the Egg Quality Assurance™ program that ensures farmers meet strict on-farm food safety standards. This includes mandated protocols for storage, cleanliness, air quality and record-keeping.

The EQA® program applies to eggs of all types, colours, and sizes produced on regulated Canadian egg farms. The program’s identifying certification mark is voluntarily displayed on egg cartons and restaurant menus across the country.

BENEFITS OF BEING A LICENSEE

Displaying the EQA® certification mark makes it easier for consumers to make confident and informed food choices.

Research shows that 3 in 4 Canadians recall food quality certification symbols when grocery shopping, and 1 in 2 recall them on restaurant menus;1 positioning visible certification as a helpful cue for customers.

In addition, 82% of Canadians believe that all eggs sold in grocery stores and served in restaurants should feature a clear symbol indicating eggs are produced on a Canadian farm and that they meet national standards for food safety and animal welfare.1

These expectations are reflected in purchase behaviour. 70% of Canadians say that seeing the EQA® certification mark on egg cartons or menus increases their likelihood to purchase or order those eggs.1
